The doctor walked in the room. Somehow, I knew the news wasn’t going to be exciting. She started to speak, as the words left her mouth into the air, the more numb I became. “I’m sorry, but George will never talk, comprehend or every have the ability and capacity to love. He is autistic. His chances of functioning independently are bleak. College, will never be an option!”
I left discouraged. Ashamed. Disappointed. Wounded. However, as I wiped the tears, somehow there was a glimmer of hope. I became a teacher that day. And George would become my student.
